Given that many funds are SEC-registered (i.e. are subject to stricter regulations regarding the disclosure of material public information) how does that affect the communications amongst the market participants? What if your buddy at a HF accidentally discloses something that is non-public and neither one of you realizes that (i.e. you don't get restricted) and you make a trade (not necessarily based on that information alone)... Wouldn't that be violation of the rules? Same if you are talking to a sell-side analyst on a name, and he just heard something say from a journalist that is material but is not public yet (the journalist is still trying to confirm the information). what do you do?
