Vlookup and Match

I have 2 sets of data and want to see if the securities in the first list are also in the second and then pull certain characteristics (isin, coupon, etc) from one to the other.
I was advised to use match first and then vlookup. with the first step i have a formatting issue when using issue date as the match value... even though the dates in both sets of data are formatted as date *3/14/2011 excel does not treat them the same and i get #n/a error. i have verified this why i got the error by copy-pasting one of the values in the other set and then running a2=b2.. and it was TRUE whereas for the other ones, it was false...
